How solar & batteries work
Solar panels turn daylight (not just direct sun) into electricity you use for free in your home; a battery stores the surplus so you can use it in the evening instead of exporting it cheaply. A typical UK home covers 40–70% of its electricity with a well-specified system, more with a battery.
What you'll generate
A standard 4 kWp system (about 10 panels) generates roughly 3,400–4,000 kWh a year in the UK — a little more in the sunny south, less in the north, and best on a south-facing roof at about 35°. East/west roofs still work well, spreading generation across the day.
Costs & payback
A 4 kWp system is typically £5,000–£8,000; adding a 5–10 kWh battery another £2,500–£5,000. With bill savings plus export income, payback is usually 8–12 years, after which it is largely free power. Panels last 25+ years. Try the savings calculator below.
Do you need a battery?
Not essential, but a battery roughly doubles how much of your own solar you use rather than exporting it — valuable if you are out during the day. It also lets you charge from the grid at cheap overnight rates and use it at peak. On a tight budget, panels first and battery later is fine — most systems are battery-ready.
Getting paid to export
Under the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) your supplier pays you for electricity you send back to the grid. Rates vary (roughly 5–15p/kWh), so it is worth comparing suppliers; some tariffs pair with a battery for ‘buy low, sell high’ savings.
Choosing a system & installer
Use an MCS-certified installer (needed for SEG). Get a few quotes, check the panel and inverter brands and warranties, and make sure the quote is based on your actual roof — shading and orientation — not a generic estimate. We can connect you to vetted installers.
