A “smart home” in 2026 isn’t one gadget or app — it’s everyday things you can control from your phone or voice, and that increasingly manage themselves. You don’t do it all at once: most people start with one layer (usually lighting or heating) and add more over a year or two. This guide walks the layers in the order most worth doing.

What a smart home actually is in 2026

Two things changed the game. First, Matter — a shared standard backed by Amazon, Google, Apple and Samsung — means a bulb, plug or sensor from one brand finally works with any of the big systems, so you’re no longer locked in. Second, AI assistants got genuinely capable: instead of memorising rigid commands you can say “set the house for movie night” and it dims the lights, drops the blinds and cues the TV.

The foundation: Matter, Thread & your hub

Before buying devices, pick the “brain” that runs them. Three broad routes:

  • A mainstream ecosystemAmazon Alexa, Google Home or Apple Home. Cheapest and easiest; a smart speaker doubles as the hub. Best if you want simple and are happy in one company’s world.
  • A dedicated hubSamsung SmartThings or Hubitat. More device support and local rules, still friendly.

Smart lighting — the best place to start

Lighting is cheap, easy and instantly useful. Two approaches:

  • Smart bulbs (Philips Hue, LIFX, Aqara) screw straight in for per-bulb dimming and colour — but lose power if someone flips the wall switch. Best for lamps and app/voice-controlled rooms.
  • Smart switches (Lightwave, Aqara, Sonoff) replace the wall switch itself, so the light stays smart however it’s turned on and your existing bulbs stay. Best for whole-room control.

The real magic is automation: motion-triggered hallway and bathroom lights, a “leaving home” off-switch, a sunrise fade, and circadian colour that warms through the evening. Budget roughly £20–£60 a bulb or £30–£100 a switch; a two-room starter is around £150–£300.

Smart heating — the biggest money-saver

This is the layer that pays for itself. A smart thermostat (Nest, tado°, Hive, Honeywell) learns your routine, turns down when you leave (geofencing) and controls from anywhere; add smart radiator valves for per-room heat — warm the lounge in the evening without heating empty bedrooms. Security & cameras

Smart security spans video doorbells, cameras, door/motion sensors, smart locks and sirens — alerts to your phone, and links to the rest of your home (lights that snap on when someone approaches at night). The key decision is cloud vs local storage: cloud systems (Ring, Google Nest) are easiest but usually need a monthly subscription for recordings; local-storage kit (Eufy, Aqara, or cameras on Home Assistant) keeps footage in your home with no fee — better for privacy and cost. A doorbell is £100–£200; a couple of cameras £150–£400.

Multiroom audio

Whole-home audio plays music in every room — synced for a party or different per room — by app or voice. Sonos is the benchmark for ease and quality, WiiM is superb value, and Denon HEOS and Apple AirPlay 2 are strong alternatives. It’s the priciest layer per room (£150–£500 a speaker), so start with the rooms you use most and expand.

Blinds, energy & chores

Automated blinds and curtains (SwitchBot, Aqara, Somfy) open at sunrise, close at dusk, or drop when a room overheats. Voice control & AI home agents — the state of the art

Every system takes voice commands via Alexa, Google Assistant or Siri. The 2026 leap is AI home agents: LLM-powered assistants — Amazon Alexa+, Google Gemini for Home, and local AI on Home Assistant — that understand natural, multi-step requests (“it’s cold and I’m about to watch a film”) and run your home proactively rather than waiting for exact commands.
